Book Cloud 9 if you want to swim without a room. A R300 minimum spend gets non-residents onto the roof, and it is the only pool on our Cape Town list with day access sold online.

The pool

Cloud 9's plunge pool is on the rooftop of the Mountain Club Bistro, a two-level bar and restaurant at 12 Kloof Nek Rd in Gardens. The 360-degree outlook takes in the city, Lion's Head and Table Mountain. The rooftop holds 50 people at most, and it is adults only.

Our take

Cloud 9 is the practical choice on this list for visitors who aren't guests. Most of the other pools here, including The Silo and Pullman, are for residents only. Here the entry price is a R300 minimum spend, which you spend on food and drinks.

A plunge pool suits cooling off rather than laps, and the 50-person cap means busy evenings can fill up. The hotel doesn't publish heating, so don't count on warm water in winter. Non-guests bring their own towel.

Good to know

Tips

  • Go in January to March, the best swim months, when highs average 27°C in January.
  • Pack your own towel, because non-residents aren't supplied one.
  • Book ahead for an evening slot, since the rooftop holds a maximum of 50 people.

Before you go. Check on hotelcloudnine.com how the R300 minimum spend is booked for your date, since the rooftop is capped at 50 people.
