Where you can swim on a hotel rooftop this winter

From November to January, a rooftop pool only works where the afternoon air stays warm. These 33 cities average highs of about 25°C (77°F) or more through those months, ranked from the most reliable.

Temperatures are long-term averages for each city's weather station. Afterwards, we list cooler cities where at least one rooftop pool is heated or open all year, for a swim that's more bracing.

December averages 30°C (85°F). Ten Brisbane hotels with rooftop pools: one sells day passes, six are guests only, and four heat the water.

Our first pick: Ovolo Fortitude Valley. Only day pass on our list: A$49, Wednesday to Sunday.

Cancun

December averages 29°C (84°F). Three of 12 rooftop pools sell day passes, one is on the 18th floor, and most hotels don't publish access rules.

Our first pick: Excellence Playa Mujeres. Plunge pools on rooftop terrace suites, plus seven resort pools.

Chiang Mai

December averages 29°C (85°F). Four rooftop pools, one stated guests-only, none with published day passes. Infinity pools face the river and Doi Suthep.

Our first pick: Cross Chiang Mai Riverside. Rooftop infinity pool facing the river, guests only.

Goa

December averages 33°C (92°F). Ten rooftop pools in a state where winter highs run 32.5°C to 33.5°C. Only La Baga publishes its floor, the 16th, and none states visitor access.

Our first pick: De Mandarin. 23 suites, two outdoor pools, direct beach access in Candolim.

Hua Hin

December averages 30°C (86°F). Five rooftop pools, none selling day passes. Hotel Muse publishes its 19th-floor pool; Holiday Inn Vana Nava has two edgeless pools.

Jeddah

December averages 31°C (87°F). Six rooftop pools, hot from June to August. Rosewood sells a Pool Pass; Assila publishes the only floor, the 20th.

Mumbai

December averages 32°C (90°F). Eleven hotels, no published day passes, two guests-only. Most are in the airport belt; Taj Lands End has the fullest pool setup.

Our first pick: Taj Lands End. Large pool, lap pool, kids' pool and poolside bar.

Pattaya

December averages 30°C (86°F). Fourteen rooftop pools, one with a day-pass route, and a 27th-floor infinity pool, the highest that publishes its floor.

Our first pick: Arbour Hotel. 24th-floor pool with towels and showers on the deck.

Phnom Penh

December averages 31°C (87°F). Thirteen rooftop pools, none sold as day passes, and warm weather all year.

Our first pick: The Peninsula Phnom Penh. Infinity pool facing the Tonle Sap River, sky bar on the roof.

Playa del Carmen

December averages 29°C (83°F). Thirteen rooftop pools in a beach town where January still averages 27.8°C. Five sell day passes to non-guests, from MX$545, and two are guests only.

Our first pick: The Reef 28. Non-guests swim on a MXN 500 minimum spend; roof Jacuzzi and DJs.

Punta Cana

December averages 29°C (85°F). Three hotels, no day passes sold. One roof infinity pool with a bar, one guests-only hotel, and a seven-pool resort.

Our first pick: Finest Punta Cana. Seven pools, one adults-only, plus children's pools.

San Juan

December averages 84°F (29°C). Ten rooftop pools, three sold as day passes, one guests only, and December highs of 29°C.

Cooler cities with heated or year-round pools

Here the winter air is too cool for a long swim, but these hotels heat their rooftop water or keep the pool open all year. Check opening dates before you book.
